Objectives

In order to achieve its overall ambition, FuSuMaTech Phase 1 addresses 4 main objectives which are further detailed hereafter. Per objective, more details can be found by clicking on the boxes below.

  1. Identify the ecosystems and the synergies between on the one hand the areas of MRI and NMR in the advanced medical imaging sector as well as other industrial applications in the sectors of energy transmission (power networks and superconducting Wind turbine) and on the other hand the HL-LHC and FCC investments in the technology domains of superconducting magnets.
  2. Develop the “synergy region” i.e. close relationships between researchers and industrial stakeholders involved in the above mentioned domains so as to exchange information and transfer knowledge that will help tackle future innovation challenges.
  3. Establish an R&D&I European ecosystem gathering consolidated as well as new actors such as young researchers, entrepreneurs and high-tech SMEs from the above mentioned domains, especially energy savings and medical applications, and broadening the engagement of researchers and industrial stakeholders.
  1. Analyse the strategic roadmaps of both magnets for particle physics and magnets for medical and industrial applications with a vision extending over the next 15 years. The analysis will cover the area of superconductivity and the area of the necessary associated technologies (i.e. cryogenics). The two roadmaps will consider scientific and technological aspects as well as economic relevant issues.
  2. Identify a set of common technical challenges either of generic R&D&I nature (e.g. database and quench analysis) or of technological nature (16T MRI concept magnet; HTS insert for HFML).
  3. Describe a new model of collaboration based on synergies and on a win-win strategy to overcome these challenges in the context of a future FuSuMaTech European Cluster.
  4. Establish a legal frame for this new model of collaboration and define the rules for IP protection, in the context of a future FuSuMaTech European Cluster.
  1. Starting from the existing list of pre-selected subjects, propose practical joint R&D&I actions to be implemented in the following five years.
  2. Define the funding schemes of these actions within the ecosystem and consistently with the ongoing HLLHC project and FCC study.
  3. Present the results during the final FuSuMaTech Phase 1 workshop, in view of a future FuSuMaTech European Cluster.
  1. Propose practical joint innovative pilot / demonstrator actions to be implemented in the next ten years.
  2. Confirm realistic parameters and establish development plans for each subject.
  3. Define the funding schemes of these actions within the ecosystem and in the appropriate economic and industrial landscape.
  4. Present the results in view of networking the future European Cluster.
